Backlinks vs. AI Citations: The GEO Explainer
By A Cardona — September 15, 2026
If you've started hearing the term GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) alongside SEO, it's worth understanding how it actually relates to backlinks, because the two get mixed up constantly.
Two different questions
Traditional SEO answers one question: when someone searches Google, where does your page rank? Backlinks are one of the biggest levers there.
GEO answers a different question: when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question, does your business get mentioned in the answer? That's not a ranking position, it's a citation, and the mechanics behind it aren't identical to classic SEO.
Where the two overlap
They're not unrelated. AI tools that answer questions still lean on real-world authority signals to decide what to trust and cite, and a site with a strong backlink profile, real reviews, and genuine mentions across the web tends to read as more credible to both a human and a model. Being the kind of business other sites want to link to is still a foundation worth having.
But the citation mechanics themselves differ by engine, and it matters to know which one you're optimizing for:
- Google's AI Overviews draw heavily from pages that are already well-indexed and relevant to the query, similar to traditional ranking factors.
- Perplexity builds its own index and has said publicly that it weighs things like whether a site corrects its mistakes and clearly separates opinion from reporting.
- ChatGPT's search feature crawls and indexes pages somewhat independently of Google, so being invisible to Google doesn't automatically mean being invisible to ChatGPT, and vice versa.
What actually moves the needle for AI visibility
A few things matter more here than they do for classic SEO:
- Being mentioned by name across the web, not just linked to. Getting cited in an AI answer often correlates with how often your brand shows up in text generally: review sites, forums like Reddit, YouTube, comparison articles.
- Clear, direct answers on your own pages. AI tools tend to pull sentences that answer a question plainly, not marketing copy that talks around the point.
- Being crawlable in the first place. A lot of AI crawlers (unlike Googlebot) don't execute JavaScript, so if your site's content only renders after the page loads, some of these tools may never see it at all.
Why this matters for a small business
If you only chase traditional rankings, you might miss the fact that a growing number of your future customers are asking an AI assistant "who's a good [your service] near me" instead of typing it into Google. Backlinks help you show up in both places, but they're not the whole story for AI anymore.
Verrly tracks both sides under one roof: real backlink building, plus a free GEO check that tells you how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI already answer questions about your business today.
